Photodynamic therapy is an extremely effective alternative for hard-to-manage or severe acne. A photosensitizer called Levulan® is applied to the affected area, in-office. During a one-hour waiting period, the photosensitizing agent is selectively taken up by the oil glands as well as the bacteria involved in acne. We then use an intense pulsed light source to shrink the oil glands and kill the bacteria and thus clear the acne.

Photodynamic treatment has been shown microscopically to increase the deposition of Collagen type1 in the dermis, thereby promoting a more youthful appearance of the skin. At least 2 studies have shown that, compared with Intense Pulsed Light alone, Photodynamic Treatment (Intense Pulsed Light and Aminolevulinic acid) in the treatment of wrinkles and diffuse pigmentation showed superior results.

Typically two to three treatments are required with two-week intervals. The procedure does result in sensitivity to light for 24-48 hours following the procedure, so strict sun avoidance is required during this period.
