Luxar Laser Functions

Luxar can serve multiple functions:

• In the Ultra Pulse mode, it can create very shallow, precise depth destruction of layers of skin, without charring, due to the fact that the heat produced in this mode doesn't last long enough to produce charring and much tissue contraction. (The minimal tissue contraction that occurs, is in fact beneficial in that it reduces some sagging of the skin). This way, very thin layers of skin can literally be "sliced off", after which the skin recovers and grows over the scars and wrinkles, thus reducing the scars or wrinkles size.


• In the regular mode, it can be used to burn different skin growths, including warts, Keratoses (benign growths), precancerous skin lesions and certain skin cancers. Charring always accompanies this kind of destruction. More or less noticeable scars result from this mode of treatment.

Luxar Laser: Advantages and Disadvantages

The results of this type of resurfacing are a gold standard for acne scar removal and wrinkle reduction. However, side effects may occur. The most feared ones are hyperpigmentation (excess pigment) and hypopigmentation (loss of pigment). They are, fortunately, quite rare.

The main inconvenience of this laser is the 7-9 days of downtime, during which the damaged skin has to recover. During this time, dilute vinegar soaks, followed by application of a greasy ointment, every 2 hours while awake, are mandatory to prevent infection and severe crusting. Also, oral intake of certain antibiotics is mandatory. The patient leaves the house only once a day ( in order to see the doctor).

Other Laser Resurfacing Options

Since the advent of the Fractional CO2 Lasers (Pixel, etc) we are doing much fewer ablative (Luxar) type resurfacing cases and many more Pixel cases. There is much less downtime with the Pixel (3 -4 days) than with the Luxar and the fine crusting can be camouflaged, so there often is no time lost from work. However, between 4 and 5 sessions of Pixel will do the job of one Luxar session.
