Most of the cosmetic work on lips consists of lip augmentation on patients whose lips are thinning and losing contour due to chronological aging and sun-induced aging.

Some younger patients with thin lips, aware of of what modern cosmetic surgery can offer, are now requesting improvements in the shape and volume of their lips. As a rule, most patients also want improvement of the areas around the lips (melolabial folds and marionette lines).

Multiple injectable fillers are available nowadays. Depending on the patient's wishes, and upon consultation regarding what is feasible and appropriate for each case, a patient can choose from:

1. Collagen:
   A.- Bovine Collagen: Zyderm Zyplast Requires Intradermal testing: 2 sessions 2 weeks apart, prior to treatment.
   B.- Human Collagen: Cosmoderm1, Cosmoderm 2 and Cosmoplast (The suffix Plast indicates cross linking of collagen, thus longer durability but higher viscosity). Does not require intradermal testing.
   C.- Recently introduced: Evolence: Porcine Collagen, non allergenic. Does not require testing and, because of special cross linking, longer lasting than A and B
   
   
   
2. Hyaluronic Acid: Restylane and Perlane (both crosslinked). Also Juvederm Ultra and Juvederm Ultra Plus (both crosslinked). Also, just introduced in late 2008: Prevelle Silk: Hyaluronic acid with local anesthetic, requiring minimal prior local anesthesia.
   
   
3. Radiesse: An inorganic chemical: Calcium Hydroxyapatite: Very biocompatible (well tolerated). Cannot be injected in the lips, but is very useful in the melolabial folds and marionette lines.
   
   
4. Sculptra: Polylactic acid: Not a filler, but a powerful stimulator of the skin's own ability to manufacture new collagen. Also, like Radiesse, cannot be injected in the lips but gives excellent results in the melolabial folds and marionette lines. The latter 2: Radiesse and Sculptra are long lasting (1 year or longer) while Collagen (Except for Evolence) is the shortest lasting. Drs. Eugene And Steven Mandrea use all the above mentioned fillers, sometimes in combination with each other or along with Thermage or Refirme.
   
   
5. Artefil: Artefil has been taken off the market.
   
   
6. Silicone: Permanent filler. We do not use Silicone.
