Juvederm is a non-animal Hyaluronic acid preparation.

Hyaluronic acid is the main component of the ground substance of the skin, in which the Collagen Elastin and Reticulin fibers reside. As we age, the amount of the hyaluronic acid in the skin diminishes. Also the quality of the Collagen and of the Elastic fibers changes.

Injections of Hyaluronic acid usually bring a more youthful appearance when injected in the melolabial folds (folds between the upper lip and the cheeks) and the marionette lines (folds between the chin and the cheeks). It can also be used to augment the lip line (Vermillion border), sometimes dramatically.

Recent studies have shown that by enhancing the skin's thickness with Hyaluronic acid, new collagen fibers are being deposited, thus adding a dynamic component to rejuvenation.

The Hyaluronic acid in Juvederm is cross-linked in a unique way, which makes it much more durable (Up to one year) than any of the other hyaluronic acid preparations. It is also more easily injected into the skin, due to the same special cross-linking process. Thus, a smoother feeling results than with the other hyaluronic acid fillers.

Juvederm is injected in the mid dermis or deep dermis with a fine needle. A nerve block, similar to the one done by the dentist, makes it easy to tolerate. A temporary swelling of the injected area resolves in a few days.
