Vitiligo

Treatment: No easy treatments are available.

Vitiligo occurs in 0.5 to 1% of the population. It may start in childhood or adulthood. About 30% of Vitiligo patients have a relative with this condition, although the mode of inheritance seems to be multifactorial.

Vitiligo may be localized or generalized. The latter variety is more common. An autoimmune cause is the most likely.

Often, other autoimmune conditions are associated with Vitiligo: Thyroid autoimmune conditions, Diabetes, Alopecia Areata etc.

Some cases respond to topical steroids and to the topical Calcineurin inhibitor Protopic.

In more resistant ,especially widespread cases, Narrow Band UVB can be quite effective. Between 50 and 100 treatments (sometimes even more) may be necessary to achieve repigmentation of large (but not all)areas.

For resistant localized areas, the 308 nm Excimer Laser, especially in conjunction with Protopic, can be very effective. We have the Narrow Band UVB in the Palos Office and the 308 nm Excimer Laser in the Palos and Park Ridge Office.
