Freckles / liver spots / lentigos
Lentigos are light brown or tan usually round, flat spots that may be found anywhere on the skin or on mucosal surfaces. The most common type of lentigo encountered is the solar lentigo which is induced by the sun, and these occur in sun-exposed areas; a liver spot is a solar lentigo on the hands and face of older people. Although the diagnosis is usually straightforward, benign lentigos may mimic moles, or nevi, and any changing pigmented lesion should always be evaluated by a dermatologist.
Sun avoidance and sun protective agents are the best ways to prevent new solar lentigos. Existing lesions can be treated in a variety of ways, including the Diolite laser, Intense Pulsed Light, Chemical peels, or Microdermabrasion, often in combination with topical bleaching agents.
Freckles are small brown or tan spots that occur on sun-exposed skin. They become prominent in the summer and tend to subside in the winter. They may respond to the same treatment modalities as lentigos.
