Teenagers and tanning
A recent study published in the Archives of Dermatology (December 2010) shows that teenagers who go to tanning spas accompanied by their mother, have a greater chance to start tanning early (age 14 1/2) and to become heavy tanners (more than 25 sessions per year) than teenagers who go alone (who start around age 16)
A lesser, but significant influence on teenage tanning habits was exercised by peers (friends, relatives).
Inasmuch as indoor tanning by people younger than age 35 increases the risk of Malignant Melanoma by 75%, it is important for parents to be aware of these studies.
