Despite abundant evidence that suntanning and indoor UV Machine tanning cause skin cancer (Malignant Melanoma and Non Melanoma Skin Cancer), there is an increase in the number of people who expose themselves to these harmful rays.
The main reason seems to be the desire to look healthy and glamorous. However, some people who tan report a feeling of well being at the time of tanning, even though they are aware of the cancer causing dangers. This mood enhancement effect is seen especially in frequent tanners and has shown features of addiction. (J.AmAcademy of Derm.. 2007; 56:375-9)
We remind our patients when the subject of tanning comes up, that the only safe tan is the self tan.
Numerous self tanning products are available and can be found at cosmetic counters and on line.
They provide NO sun protection and therefore a sunscreen is necessary before any sun exposure.

Increased incidence of Basal Cell Carcinomas in sun tanners
Previous studies have demonstrated an increased incidence of Squamous Cell Carcinomas and Malignant Melanomas in tanning bed users. Now, a recent article shows an increase of early onset of Basal Cell Carcinomas among users of tanning beds.
