Accutane and Ulcerative Colitis/Crohn's disease:
Two recent articles in the American Journal of Gastroenterology address this possible connection. One, in November 2009 finds no connection between Accutane use and Ulcerative Colitis/Crohn's Disease. Another one, published in March 2010, finds a small connection between Accutane and Ulcerative Colitis but not Crohn's disease. The possible connection should be considered by both patients and physicians. At Lakeviewderm we prefer to err on the side of caution. We are now using devices that work almost as well as Accutane, without the numerous possible severe side effects: Photodynamic Therapy with application of Aminolevulinic acid followed by Isolaz or the Red or Blue Light. Four to six treatments, 4 weeks apart are necessary. Unfortunately, unlike Accutane, they are not covered by Insurance.
