are also known as Bullous Pemphigoid, Pemphigus Vulgaris, Pemphigus Foliaceous, Mucous Membrane Pemphigoid Blistering diseases
are autoimmune conditions which lead to blisters on the skin or mucous membranes. The most common is Bullous Pemphigoid and it predominantly affects the elderly. It can start with an itchy rash that looks like hives, but ultimately leads to blisters all over the skin. A reaction to a medication can sometimes cause the condition, but most times a cause is not found. There is a variant of this condition that occurs during pregnancy called pemphigoid gestationis. The other types of blistering diseases of the skin include pemphigus vulgaris, pemphigus foliaceous, and mucous membrane pemphigoid. Pemphigus vulgaris tends to lead to blister formation on the mucosal surfaces like the mouth, genitals, and anus. Mucous membrane pemphigoid is similar to bullous pemphigoid but tends to leave scarring after the blisters heal.
