Moles

The term "moles" is commonly used to refer to brownish spots on the skin called "nevi" (singular = nevus). The vast majority of these moles are benign (non-cancerous) and tend to increase in number on the body until about age 30.

Over years, moles typically transition from flat spots to raised lesions to soft fleshy growths. Sun exposure increases the number of moles in exposed skin, and people with lighter complexions have a greater number of moles than those with darker skin.

Some moles may have atypical looking features and warrant further evaluation with a skin biopsy. The purpose of the biopsy is to rule out a skin cancer, or malignant melanoma. We recommend that anyone with a large number of moles or moles that appear to have changed or stand out from the others, schedule an appointment for a skin exam.

Sun avoidance and sun protection with high spf sunscreens or physical sun blocking agents and sun-protective clothing are very important for the prevention of new moles and prevention of skin cancers.
